(Dissimulato)

Post by Batman on Thu May 29, 2014 6:48 pm

Latin for "disguise".

Ever since the start of the age of humanity, magical creatures of every kind have had no choice but to master the art of magical disguise. A dissimulato is not an illusion; it is the actual morphing of one's body parts. A dissimulato can range from a Vampire's minor change in eye color and tooth length to a dragon morphing from its huge serpentine form to a human. Because such disguises are usually very complex, it is common for a creature to have only one very specific dissimulato that becomes their secondary form. Each species has one type that they are more likely to specialize in, with the most common being the human dissimulato.

(Rules of Magic)

Post by Batman on Thu May 29, 2014 6:54 pm

• All beings generate magic, only few can manipulate it.
• Energy cannot be created, only repurposed.
• Magic affects everything, especially those who are sensitive to it.
• Anything external of magical origin requires training
• Magic is generated primarily through emotion, particularly intense emotion
• Magical energy is divided into negative and positive ends of the spectrum. Imbalance has been known to cause psychological issues.
• A wizard's hair and eyes are particularly affected by magic. It is common for a wizard to use hair dye or color contacts to hide this.

Hair corresponds to dispositions:
Brown: Temperate, calculating, selfish
Black: Unpredictable, volatile,
Blonde: Vain, ambitious, driven, loyal
Red/Orange: Ambitious, cold, pragmatic, treacherous
Grey: Anxious, fearful, quick-witted
Silver: Rude, obnoxious, neurotic

Dragons

Post by Batman on Thu May 29, 2014 6:56 pm

Appearance:
Dragons come in different shapes, depending on which region they are from. Some are flightless (such as the serpentine Chinese dragons whose likenesses are so often featured in New Years parades) but most have wings (such as the common European dragon found mostly around the UK and its ex-colonies in North America).

Temperament:
Dragons are very wild creatures; fiery in every aspect of life. For this reason, some may choose to avoid the chains of civilization and even avoid forming a dissimulato at all.

Dragons have a tendency to hoard shiny things (particularly gold) and will sometimes give their hoard to their special someone as a sign of ultimate sacrifice and devotion.

Fire:
Contrary to folklore, dragons cannot make fire out of nothing, though they are incredibly fireproof. Most species of dragons are born with pouches in the back of their throats akin to the pouches one might find in a fish's throat. These pouches can be used to keep their eggs safe when they are in full dragon form, but are most commonly used to carry flammable objects or spark-inducing materials. Once a dragon has exhaled its poisonous gas or spray (depending on their breed), it can ignite the stuff by using their neck muscles to grind the contents of the pouch together (so heaven forbid that a dragon catches a cough!). If a dragon runs out of/wears out the contents of their pouch, they will be forced to use an outside source to ignite their gas or spray. In order to avoid igniting one's house or dear great auntie dragon's patchwork quilt, it is necessary for a dragon to master fire manipulation through magic. Much of the wizarding community's knowledge of this realm of magic can be attributed to some time a few centuries back when a rich wizard and a greedy dragon made a deal and made history. Once he had learned what he could from the dragon, he taught it to other wizards... for a price.

Characters:
Female. Dark skin, short pixie cut, Indian appearance, amber eyes. Sometimes draws out an S on accident like thissss [still considering this idea]. Sometimes keeps weird things in her throat pouches for safe keeping. When she met the Unicorn and took a liking to him, she ate his girlfriend- her only competition. They are now married, though it is sometimes frustrating due to her nature. As a way of helping her vent, the couple takes up a lot of extreme sports in their free time. Even so, she is considered rather tame... for a dragon, at least.

Dwarves

Post by Batman on Thu May 29, 2014 6:58 pm

Appearance:
Though dwarves are short, folklore exaggerates their height deficiency. It is likely that even you, dear reader, have met a dwarf without even realizing it. Besides being short, they are usually stocky, broad-shouldered and squared-jawed with varying eye color, skin color and hair types.

Temperament:
It was the dwarves who aided the elves in the famous ancient battle before the rise of the age of humanity, though they shoulder none of the shame for the alliance's eventual defeat. Dwarves are not the type to dwell on anything, nor give in to sentiment or pride. Logic and good sound common sense rules this race, as well as a good work ethic and an amazing alcohol tolerance. Sometimes their refusal to be brash is paradoxically nonsensical, as it can border into hard-headed stubborness.

Elves

Post by Batman on Thu May 29, 2014 7:02 pm

Appearance:
Tall stature, pointed ears, lean body type, lavender (greyish purple) irises, varying hair types and varying skin colors.

Temperament:
The elves are a race of warriors. They have never been quite able to live down their defeat in the battle of Whoknowswhat at Whoknowswhere which was a key turning point that led to the rise of the era of humanity. To this day they remain proud of their race and their culture and they keep up their long-standing tradition of raising up deft fighters and "obsessing" over weapons, even though this tradition is no longer necessary in this modern culture of ...*shudder*... politics.

Characters:
Blond hair that he keeps in a traditional long elven braid down his back. Uses magic excessively and in a showy manner and so he randomly falls asleep in odd places. (Dwarf calls him "sleeping beauty" sometimes.) He is also way too proud of his race, so he never formed a dissimulato to hide his lavender eye color and his pointed ears. If any human gets overly curious, he uses cosmetic surgery and eye contacts as his coverup.

Also, never take him to a bar, as he will probably be too vain to tell you until it's too late that he is a pathetic lightweight.

Gryphons

Post by Batman on Thu May 29, 2014 7:03 pm

They exist, but [NAME 1 REMOVED} doesn't know much about them.

She still wants to have a Gryphon name Griffin though (who is probably a dental hygienist, according to [NAME 2 REMOVED]).

Phoenix

Post by Batman on Thu May 29, 2014 7:05 pm

Colorado has accumulated an abundance of phoenixes over the decades, which attributes to the state's notorious annual fire season.

Phoenixes usually choose a bird dissimulato, disguising themselves as the common winged wildlife of their home region.

Unicorns

Post by Batman on Thu May 29, 2014 7:14 pm

Appearance:
Unicorns can come in many colors and patterns ranging from shades of black to brown to white. Males tend to have a goat-like "beard" protruding from the chin. All unicorns sport the same spiraled horn, though that too can come in different earthen colors.

Temperament:
Creatures of purity, unicorns usually remain chaste their entire lives. Since they are so unlikely to ever mate during their centuries of life, they are very rare. A unicorn is drawn to purity, innocence and naivety and they often try to protect such characteristics in the humans they meet. Unicorns have a hereditary tendency to grow uncomfortable and even nauseous around those who lack purity, which gives them their misleading reputation for being stuck up and arrogant.

Characters:
Blonde, combed back wavy hair. Blue eyes, tall, muscular mesomorphic body. Doesn't like to mention he's a unicorn because it demasculates him in the eyes of other mythical creatures.

Though he is still quite conservative by anyone else's standards, he is a very "out there" unicorn for marrying a dragon and going so far as to even... *gasp*... kiss her on their wedding day. When they first were getting to know each other, he wasn't even too terribly surprised or angry when the dragon ate his girlfriend at the time. He may be abstinent, but that doesn't mean he's up on all the other human sentiments and morals. Over time he has been able to slowly work past a lot of the discomfort that first came with being near the dragon that is now his spouse, but he remains abstinent.

Vampires

Post by Batman on Thu May 29, 2014 7:22 pm

Appearance:
Vampires look very human, save for their sharp canines left over from the more primal eras when ripping one's enemy's throat out with your teeth was still a thing. Their eyes are varying shades of red. Skin color varies.

Sustenance:
Let's just start with the elephant in the catalogue entry: Vampires do not drink blood. They feed off of the energy of others.

Since the core of any creature's magical energy is at the frontal lobe of the brain, this is where a vampire targets to feed. Simply make physical contact with the victim's forehead and /bon appetite/. Feeding does not have to kill the victim if the vampire shows a bit of restraint. It will instead just mentally and emotionally drain them. If the vampire wasn't too terribly greedy, it's nothing a good nap can't fix.

The energy a vampire harvests from a person will be more potent if the victim is in the midst of experiencing more extreme emotions. For example: ecstasy, fear, agony, lust and despair, to name a few. Because of this specie's endeavors to spice up their meals, they have fallen under the stereotype that all vampires are serial killers.

Vampires cannot feel any emotions of their own, making the need for potent emotions all the more prominent. When a vampire is hungry, the last of whatever emotion is left will turn sour and curdle into irritation and other such unsavory moods.

Reproduction:
To make a vampire, suck all of a human's emotions out of him, thereby killing him. The supernatural parasite within the vampire who fed senses the now soulless being and jumps to the corpse, thereby reanimating them. Since the old vampire had to feed in order to create the new vampire, the energy within its body is enough to keep it animated despite the loss of its parasite.

Nocturnalism:
Vampires cannot sleep, but it has become the cultural norm amongst the species to practice a sort of meditation in order to shut down most of their body to save energy. This comes in handy during times when there is nothing to do but wait out the sun.

Weaknesses:
Sun - Vampires cannot walk out into the sun unprotected, but there are certain shielding spells that can be used as protection against the harmful rays. It is not common for a vampire to use this kind of magic since such a spell takes a lot of energy to cast.

Fire - Vampires dislike fire because it is a small reminder of the sun. Very prolonged or intense exposure will hurt them.

Holy Objects - It is not the object that hurts the vampire, but the faith that the wielder puts in the object. Every being harbors magic within them, but it is the mundane humans that have the most trouble channeling it. By channeling so much of their emotion into one object, they are able to utilize that magical energy that is normally inaccessible.

Invitation - A vampire cannot enter a private building without invitation. (Dubbing a public building "public" is invitation enough.)

Arithmomania - uncommon defect that can occur as a result of becoming a vampire.

Werewolves

Post by Batman on Thu May 29, 2014 7:42 pm

Appearance:
Shaggy in appearance with less regard for neatness or style. As wolves, they look like large tailless timber wolves.

Temperament:
Werewolves are pack animals (with the usual alphas and omegas) and very protective of their clan and themselves. Outside of their pack, they are generally antisocial and suspicious of others. Werewolves are passionate creatures who are quick to anger or overreact.

Transformation:
Lycanthropy is spread like a disease through any exchange of the bodily fluids (hence, werewolf bites). Younger, less experienced wolves require a full moon to transform and even so, they have trouble controlling the beast. Older, more experienced wolves are able to control the transformation a little more. As [NAME 2 REMOVED] puts it: "The fuller the moon, the wolfier they are" with the full moon bringing full wolf form.

Weaknesses:
Silver Bullets - commonly lethal.
Wolfsbane - Ingestion of wolfsbane (aka the Aconitum flower) can poison a wolf and make him ill. Wolfsbane is a secret key ingredient in chocolate, which is why dogs cannot eat large quantities of this type of confection. Since it is so disagreeable to werewolves, the race of vampires is very supportive of chocolate manufacture. One of the earliest known vampires to become prominent in the chocolate business is Milton S. Hershey who founded the "Hershey Foods Corporation" and became famous for his company's popular chocolate production.
